Use a payment portfolio
Cash remains useful for small vendors, local transport, markets, tips where appropriate, and outages. Cards are useful for larger merchants and evidence. Thai QR payment is widespread but a visitor’s ability to pay through it depends on the participating account or service. Do not assume a familiar logo means your account can transact.
Separate an emergency note reserve from daily cash and carry at least two cards from independently accessible accounts when possible. Keep issuer contact details and the ability to freeze each card without relying on the card itself.
Control currency and fees
At an ATM or card terminal, read the currency, amount, and any conversion choice before approval. A merchant or machine may offer to convert into your home currency; compare that method with your issuer’s terms rather than accepting because the number looks familiar.
Withdraw or exchange in secure, legitimate locations and put cash away before moving on. Count discreetly. Keep the receipt for a failed or disputed ATM event and contact the operator and issuer through verified channels.

Slow down for transfers and deposits
A bank transfer may offer less practical recovery than a card transaction. Before paying a rental deposit, tour, treatment plan, or long stay, connect the recipient’s legal or trading identity to the written offer and receipt. A QR image sent in chat is not enough by itself.
Never approve a transaction because someone says the queue, fare, booking, or official system will disappear in seconds. If the recipient changes after the agreement, stop and verify through a known channel.
Write the payment rules
Make the rules while calm so they are available during pressure.
- 1List primary, backup, and emergency payment methods.
- 2Record freeze and support routes for each card.
- 3Choose the amount or payment type that requires a verification pause.
- 4Write the evidence required before a transfer or deposit.
