Set up phone, data, and account recovery

A data plan is only useful if the phone supports the network, is unlocked where required, and can preserve the services tied to the original number. Before travel, list which banks, email accounts, insurers, and booking systems may send codes to the home SIM.

Decide whether a physical SIM, eSIM, roaming, or a combination fits the device and trip. Keep the original SIM labelled and protected if removed. Do not discard it in the airport or leave it loose inside a case.

Check duration, data allowance, speed policy, voice capability, local number, hotspot limits, renewal, and the time the plan starts. A headline ‘unlimited’ offer may still have speed or fair-use conditions. Keep the receipt and the channel for account support.

Registration may require identity information. Use an authorized counter or provider channel, know which record is collected, and do not let a stranger take an unnecessary gallery of passport images on a personal device.

Open the accommodation pin, download an offline map area, place a call, receive a message, and confirm the intended ride or transit application works. Test the home-number recovery path without signing out of essential accounts.

Write the new number in the arrival card and share it only with the people who need it. Keep an emergency contact visible on the lock screen without exposing passport, address history, or financial information.
