Module 4: Move around Thailand

Use taxis and ride-hailing with control

Verify vehicle, destination, fare method, pickup point, and route without turning every ride into a confrontation.

What to know first

What to know first

Match the vehicle and driver to the booked or official process, confirm the destination before moving, understand the fare method, follow the route at a high level, and end the ride at a safe visible place if the arrangement materially changes.

Control the pickup

Use the official taxi queue, accommodation desk, or the ride-hailing booking shown on your own device. Check plate, vehicle, and driver details where the system provides them. Do not enter because someone repeats your first name or waves a phone from a distance.

Choose a pickup point where stopping is allowed and you can see the vehicle. Busy roads, airport levels, malls, and stations may have designated zones. A driver asking you to move far away from the published point should explain why through the booking channel.

Confirm fare and destination

For a metered taxi, establish that the meter or published queue process will be used before departure. For an app ride, compare the plate and trip in the application and do not switch to an off-platform cash arrangement without understanding the loss of tracking and support.

Show the map pin and Thai address where available. Hotels, hospitals, malls, and condominium names can repeat. Confirm the district or nearby landmark before the vehicle moves.

  • Vehicle match
  • Correct destination
  • Fare method
  • Trip stays in the agreed channel

Monitor without escalating

A route that differs from your map is not automatically wrong; traffic, one-way roads, tollways, and pickup restrictions matter. Watch the overall direction and ask a calm question when the change is material. Decide in advance whether tolls are included or paid separately.

Share trip details with a trusted contact when appropriate, keep valuables with you, and exit at a safe public place if the vehicle, driver, fare, or destination no longer matches and you can do so safely. Use Tourist Police assistance when the issue becomes a safety or fraud concern.
