In 1984, Mr. Chaowat Sudlapa, the then Governor of Kamphaeng Phet Province, initiated efforts to make Khao Son a tourist attraction for the province. The Khao Son-Khao Sanam Phriang forest was a national reserved forest, known for its well-preserved natural environment and its proximity to the provincial capital. Despite having no budget, Mr. Chaowat successfully led an effort to construct a path to the summit of Khao Son, relying on the cooperation of government officials, merchants, and local citizens. The trail to the summit was completed and officially opened to the public on March 1, 1984. Later, the Royal Forest Department recognized the importance of the area and agreed with the initiative. As a result, a Royal Decree was issued on July 20, 1985, designating the area as the Khao Sanam Phriang Wildlife Sanctuary. This decree became legally effective on August 2, 1985.
